Hikers on Kappatagudda trail with windmills

Kappatagudda, located about 20 km from Gadag, is one of North Karnataka's most scenic hill ranges. Its rolling hills are dotted with massive wind energy turbines, creating a landscape that feels both natural and futuristic. The name "Kappatagudda" translates to "Monkey Hill" in Kannada, but the real attraction here is the breathtaking panorama and the serene escape it offers from city life.

The Trek Experience

The trek to the top of Kappatagudda is easy to moderate, making it suitable for beginners and families. The trail winds through grassy slopes and rocky patches, with the windmills providing a dramatic backdrop throughout the climb. The entire ascent takes about 30–45 minutes at a comfortable pace.

Best Time for the Trek

The best time to trek Kappatagudda is during the early morning (6:00–8:00 AM) or late afternoon (3:30–5:30 PM). The morning offers crisp air and soft lighting, while the late afternoon rewards you with an incredible sunset spectacle. Winter months (October–March) provide the most comfortable conditions.

Photography Tips

For the best photos: use a wide-angle lens to capture the scale of the windmills, visit during golden hour for warm lighting, and include the undulating hills in your foreground for depth.
