Kappatagudda (also spelled Kappatagudda or Kappata Gudda) is a scenic hill range located about 20 km from Gadag town in North Karnataka. The name translates to “Monkey Hill,” but the real draw here is the stunning landscape of rolling green hills dotted with massive wind energy turbines, creating a unique juxtaposition of nature and renewable energy.
Kappatagudda has emerged as a popular weekend getaway for those seeking fresh air, open spaces, and breathtaking views. The hill range is part of a wind energy farm, making the sight of giant windmills against the blue sky an iconic visual. It’s especially famous for its sunset views, when the sky turns shades of orange, pink, and purple behind the silhouetted turbines.
The gentle slopes of Kappatagudda offer easy-to-moderate trekking trails suitable for beginners and families. The trek to the top takes about 30–45 minutes and rewards you with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The terrain is a mix of grassy paths and rocky sections — wear comfortable shoes.
The highlight of any visit to Kappatagudda is the sunset. As the sun dips below the horizon, the landscape transforms into a golden wonderland. The windmills, standing tall against the colorful sky, make for extraordinary photographs. The best viewpoint is near the topmost windmill — reachable by a short climb.
Kappatagudda is a photographer’s paradise. Capture the windmills up close, sweeping landscape panoramas, wildflowers in the monsoon season, and the dramatic skies at golden hour. The play of light and shadow across the rolling hills creates endless compositional possibilities.
Pack a picnic and enjoy a peaceful afternoon amidst nature. The open plateau areas near the windmills are perfect for spreading a mat and relaxing. Remember to carry your trash back — let’s keep Kappatagudda clean!
